A Graduation Theme Party

It's always better to have a theme for a party. Graduation alone works well, but if you add the interests of the graduate, it becomes a more fun party, not to mention a bit easier to decorate.

Don't get me wrong, just using graduation stuff is fine. Turning graduation caps upside down and filling them with flowers or balloons (more economical) makes for a great centerpiece and sticks with any theme.

Check out all of our graduation party themes for other themes and read below for some quick ideas!

Graduation Invitations

Invitation Graduation, PersonalizedThink about one of our caricatures as an invitation. We just did an invitation for a woman with her son (who was into basketball) wearing a t-shirt under an open graduation gown that had the name of the college he was going to in the fall. He had a basketball under one arm, he was standing in his bedroom, his computer screen showed NASA (he's into space travel), he was wearing a stethoscope around his neck (he wants to be a doctor), his dog was at his feet and loads more. It was fabulous and got raves. Plus she said she's going to frame one for her and one for him!

Another great option are our semi-custom caricature invitations.  Using art that has already been drawn, we can add a photo face or a caricature face and personalize the message for you! You can use the semi-custom caricature as the design for other fun elements in your graduation, including centerpieces, a welcome sign, thank you notes, and much more!

If you don’t want a caricature invitation you can still make the graduate the center of attention from start to finish. They've earned it. The invitation should match the likes and style of the graduate. A personalized invitation from Party411's Creations for You™ is a great starting place. We have over 30 designs (some of the new ones are fabulous!) so we are sure to have an invitation that will fit your graduate.  For this theme I would suggest an invitation that will let you put the graduate’s picture front and center.

Graduation Decorations and Party Supplies

Up the driveway or leading to the walk to the party entrance, think about putting school pennants. Just attach them to sticks and put them in the ground to wave everyone to the front door. Use high school or college pennants depending on which way you decide to go. If it isn't too hot outside, attach graduation balloons to your mailbox, railings, etc., but don't buy them if it's going to be really hot...they won't last in the sun!!

Personalized Sign-In Graduation BoardMake sure you have a sign-in board or sign-in book so everyone can leave messages for the graduate. But make it easy for them. Have them write down what they think will become of the graduate so he or she can look back on it in 10 years for a laugh. A sign on the table with a few starting words as examples will help get the ball rolling…

"I vote Johnnie to be …"
"When Johnnie grows up I know he'll…"

"I knew Amy when..."

Things like that. Fun and easy.

Just keep the decorations colorful, fun, and simple and it will look great. Here are a few of our favorites:

Graduation Table Decorations

Your best bet is to use disposable paper goods at a graduation party. White Chinet is fine, but you can kick your decorations up a notch by using graduation themed paper goods. Even if you just go with themed napkins and dessert plates it makes a big statement:

You can also use the high school colors for your theme or if the student is college-bound, you may want to use the college colors. Usually there are two colors--do one color cloth to the floor and do the other color as a topper and reverse them from table to table for a great look. Also, do both color napkins at each table--every other place setting. For napkin rings, wrap graduation garland around each napkin.

Tabletop Lantern DecorationFor a fun centerpiece you can place graduation caps upside down on your tables. Partially fill the cap with paper shreds (to fluff it up) and have some 2009 graduation glasses and grad cap beads coming out of it. Your guests will put un the wearables in no time (which will put a big smile on their faces)!

If your not up to creating your own centerpieces, here are a few more options:

  • Personalized Centerpiece -  If you like the personal touch this three-sided centerpiece lets you personalized the wording and add a photo!

  • Tabletop Lanterns - These vinyl lanterns are personalized with your photo and wording, and come with an LED candle!

  • Graduation Centerpiece - This metallic cascading centerpiece is "Top of the Class".

  • Star Spray Centerpiece - Add balloons to this bright centerpiece for a great look.

Graduation  Party Favors

Grad Candy Bar FavorsAgain, I say stick with your theme. Use one of our graduation party candy bars, and/or do something that fits the graduate. We recently did a soccer graduation party and we tied soccer yo-yo's around the napkins, gave everyone a nametag that was hung off a soccer ball whistle and used soccer ball erasers (miniatures) as confetti. Even the candy was foil-wrapped chocolate soccer balls!

Or try a photo themed graduation party, since these events lend themselves to reminiscing. Leave out a photo album or two and people will remember events and be happy to share those memories.  And set up a 2009 photo op and hand out personalized cameras to let your guests make some great new memories!

Have a fantastic graduation party, and give my congratulations to the guest of honor!
