Father's Day

It’s June, so it must be Father’s Day. This holiday has always been a hard one for me since the only thing my dad liked to do was work. He never watched any sports, just news. He never went to play golf, just buy office supplies. So, Father’s Day was tough. And when we would ask him what he wanted...he inevitably said, "underwear." What do you do with a guy like that?

We let him do what he wanted.

On Father’s Day each year, he cooked breakfast. Unbeknownst to us as tots, Dad loved to whip something up in the kitchen. He couldn’t have been happier. Of course, he made enough food for an army, but he was in his glory. So we celebrate Father’s Day at breakfast! Enough said.

In the meantime...

  1. If Dad is into sports, find an event--a golf tournament, a baseball game-- whichever sport you think he might enjoy. If the going is rough, and there’s not much happening, opt for something different that’s in town just for the weekend. Like what? WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), one of those drag car races, a car show, a boat show or even "Dads On Ice"--however, from what I hear, that’s been sold out for months.

  2. If Dad isn’t into sports, he’s into something. Celebrate it.

    a) If all he does is work, serve dinner in inexpensive briefcases and buy him a pocket guard for the pens he carries around in his shirt. (Oops, that’s my father, not yours).

    b) If he loves theater or film, treat him to one and then buy him dinner.

    c) If he loves to eat, make his favorite food or take him to his favorite restaurant. You can also give him personalized candy bars.

    d) If he loves working on his car, have someone come over and remove his alternator and see if he can figure out what’s wrong (oh, just kidding!)...but do buy him a wax kit, or get a mechanic to give him an hour to teach him a little bit more.

    e) If money is his favorite thing, give him the coupon inserts from Sunday papers nationwide and let him sort through them (I’m sure your friends from out of town will be happy to help and mail you theirs!)

  3. Or, if nothing else, let him sleep all day on the couch, leave the TV on and put a six pack on ice within reaching distance. What more could a dad want?
