The Game Girl says:
Try some of these:
If you are having a video, make up a Trivia contest for after the movie
and see who can remember the most. Here are some new ones to try:
Grabbit: Set some small prizes on a table, such as a box of chocolates,
a single CD, a paperback romance, a deck of cards, a blank book, and so
on, enough for each player. Let each player name a favorite card game,
such as rummy, fish, spoons, war, hearts, etc. Gather the players around
the game table and remove all but one prize, setting the others aside.
Play your favorite card game and let the winner keep the gift on the
table. Replace the prize with each new game. Pop star Trivia: find out
lots of interesting details about some popular teen stars using teen
magazines. Write down questions using the information, then have a
trivia quiz to see who knows the most about each star! Panic Word: Write
down 100 single words on index cards, such as blink, stairs, death,
lint, computer, any words you like. Stack the cards and place them in
the center of the room. Divide the players into two teams and seat them
opposite each other. Set the timer or stopwatch for 1 minute when it's
time to start the game. Have Player 1 from Team 1 draw a card from the
pile and give clues to the word to her teammates before the timer ends
the play. If the word is "blink" she might say "What you do if dust gets
in your eyes." Players from Team 1 try to guess the word, and if they
are successful before the time is up, they get a point. If the timer
runs out and the word is not guessed, the other team gets a point. Take
turns until all the cards are gone, then add up points to see who wins.
Have a Makeover Party! Send unique invitations made from clear plastic
make-up bags, with the party details written on the outside in permanent
felt- tip pen. Fill the bag with make-up goodies and mail to guests. Ask
them to bring the make-up bag to the party, then do makeovers on one
another. For a fun game, have them apply their makeup without a mirror -
and take pictures of the results. Play a game of name the make-up - cut
out ads of make-up items from teen magazines, and blacken out the names.
Have the players try to name as many product brands as they can. Make
picture frames from cardboard, decorate with stickers, puffy paints,
etc, then send home Polaroid snapshots inside frames.

Nicole asked:
Occasion: Family Get Together
I am 13 years old and am having a big family get
together slumber party. It is going to be a bunch of
us girls having fun, but I need help thinking of
more activities and games to play.
The Game Girl says:
I've listed a few here, then check the Family Reunion
section for more ideas that might help.
Larry Null asked:
Occasion: 8th Birthday Sleepover
Other than just having the kids watch the movie
"Men in Black" with shades on, what are some good
tie-in games or activities?
The Game Girl says:
Have a trivia contest from the movie and ask questions
to see what they can remember. Have them make martians
from Baker's Dough. Decorate inexpensive sunglasses
with puffy paints, glitter, and decals. Have a lip-sync
contest to the "Men in Black" song by Will Smith.
Kiesha asked:
Occasion: Sleepover
I am sick of all the old boring games I want some
more new exciting cool games that everyone will like.
The Game Girl says:
Check out the games listed below and see if any of
them work for you. There are some sleepover game
books on the market sold by American Girls that
also might help. I'm about finished with my own version
of SLUMBER PARTIES AND SLEEPOVERS, due out from
Meadowbrook Press next year, which includes lots
of fun and games for sleepovers!
Anyomous asked:
Occasion: Sleepover
I need a theme that's not too dorky and some games.
One of my friends isn't allowed to go to sleepovers,
but I want to include her in the fun and my birthday,
cuz she's one of my best friends. Thanks in Advance.
The Game Girl says:
How sweet that you want to include your friend who
can't stay overnight! So make it a fun evening for
her and everyone else, with a cooking theme. Pull out
some favorite recipes for snacks and desserts, get
all the ingredients, buy aprons for everyone, and
create some tasty concoctions to eat! Let the girls
decorate the aprons first, using puffy paints or
felt-tip pens, then wear them for cooking. As for
a game, have a taste test, where you place interesting
edible items, such as grapefruit slices, unsweetened
chocolate, pizza sauce, baby food, etc, in bags. Pass
around the items and let the girls taste without
looking. Then they have to identify the flavor!
Andrea asked:
Occasion: 11th Birthday
What kind of games can I play for a sleepover? No makeovers and slippers. I hope you have
some ideas. And how do I get my parents to let me stay up really late?
The Game Girl says:
Let me answer that "staying up late" question first. How about a compromise?
Play the games early in the evening, then settle down for videos when it gets late. Some
will fall asleep, some will stay awake and watch the video, and your parents will be able
to catch a few winks if you're quiet. As for games, how about a Video Sleepover? You can
tie the games and activities to the video you select. If you choose "A Bug's
Life" you can make little bugs out of pompoms, wiggly eyes, pieces of colored felt,
and glue. Then play "Through a Bug's Eye." Ask kids to bring their video
cameras, divide the group into teams, and have them video tape items around the house in
extreme closeup. Play back the videos, and have the other teams try to guess what they're
looking at!
Emily asked:
Occasion: Birthday
I'm having a birthday party with just my girlfriends. A slumber party you could say. And
I'm tired of the same old horror movies and truth or dare, so I want some new games ideas
for us to do other than the same old stuff and all the little kids games. Thanks.

Dexie asked:
Occasion: 11 year old sleepover birthday
I need gaaaaaaames! Help!
The Game Girl says:
How about an evening full of harmless tricks? When someone falls a sleep, dotted them
all over with washable felt-tip pen so they are polka-dotted when they wake up! When
someone goes to the bathroom, quickly cover the door with crepe paper, taped to the door
frame. What a shock when they try to come back out! Put rubber snakes in everyone's
sleeping bags and see who jumps first! Mix up everyone's slippers and race to find and put
on your own pair first! Wind a skein of yarn around the party room, then have someone
follow the yarn path to a prize at the end!
Denise Fuerte asked:
Occasion: Christian Ladies Birthday Slumber Party
We need games for a great bunch of ladies who love to laugh! Thanks for your help!
The Game Girl says:
Here's one that will keep them busy, fill their tummies, and make them laugh all at the
same time. The game is called Food Frenzy and here's what you do. Pick out some favorite
desserts from your recipe collection and copy the instructions on index cards. Buy
ingredients for all the desserts and place them on the kitchen counter. Shuffle the cards
and divide the players into two teams. Have players take turns drawing cards. Each player
reads the card and takes the listed ingredient. When all the ingredients have been
distributed, give the teams thirty minutes to prepare a dish using the ingredients
accumulated by the individual players. When the dishes are complete, have players taste
and eat the results, then vote on the best-tasting dessert! Variation: Give the teams the
same ingredients and see what different desserts they come up with - without using
recipes!
Kristen asked:
Occasion: 45th Birthday
We want to have a slumber party for our friend who is turning 45. We are doing this
because we want to relive a bit of our childhoods. Do you have any ideas for fun games?
The Game Girl says:
Dig out the old yearbooks and scrapbooks for ideas to turn into a Yesteryear Trivia
Quiz. Include questions about old schools, old teachers, old boyfriends, and old
adventures. Ask the guests to bring their old school pictures and see if everyone can
guess who's who after all these years. Find out information about the year the guest of
honor was born by using the library reference section, then write down questions and have
the honoree guess whether the event really happened. Pull out events from every year of
the honoree's life, and write them down on index cards. Have the guest of honor put them
in chronological order!
Stephanie asked:
Occasion: 13th Birthday Party
I am going to have my 13th Birthday Party and a slumber party. What teenager activities
can we do, that are not stupid and childish, but fun?
The Game Girl says:
Pick a theme for your Slumber Party and carry it through to the games. For example, if
you're having a "Makeover Party" ask the guests to bring their makeup to the
party, then do makeovers. Take pictures, mix them up, then see if the guests can recognize
one another! Do a blind makeover where you redo you face without a mirror - and see who
turns out the best - and the funniest! Get some funny makeup items and set them on a
table. Have the players guess what each item is for, such as a nose hair plucker,
astringent, cotton pads, depilatories, and other puzzling things.
Lili asked:
Occasion: 13th birthday
I am holding a sleepover birthday party and the kids hardly know each other. I need some
good games to play, but not getting to know you games. P.S. It always seems to rain, snow,
or hail on my b-day party date. Thank you.
The Game Girl says:
So you need an indoor game for kids who aren't well acquainted, eh? Here's a solution:
Make Do-It! Dice. Buy or find two square cardboard boxes and paint the boxes white. On
each side of each square, write a command or stunt, such as "Jump on one leg,"
"Sing the alphabet backwards," "Twist around," "Close your
eyes," and so on. Have the kids gather in a circle with the Do-It! Dice in the
middle. Have one player roll BOTH dice to determine his or her stunts, then have the
player perform both stunts AT THE SAME TIME. Should be lots of fun and laughs! It will
certainly break the ice!
Tanya Baker asked:
Occasion: Slumber Party
I want to know some party games to play. But I don't want to be dorky so that everyone is
bored out of their minds. Please help me!
The Game Girl says:
Don't you hate it when you have to play dorky games! Here's a non-dorky game to keep
you from being bored out of your minds. Play "The Price is Right!" Buy some
candies or small gifts for the group and note the price of each item on a separate sheet
of paper. Hold up an item one at a time, and have the guests write down how much they
think the item costs. The one who comes closest, wins the item. He drops out of the game
and the rest continue to guess and win prizes! try to guess the cost of each one.
Tricia asked:
Occasion: Sleepover 10th Birthday
Any ideas for games to play to keep these girls busy?
The Game Girl says:
Play variations on the "Slipper Game!" 1. Collect all the players' slippers
and put them in the center of the room. On the word "Go!" have players race to
find their own slippers and put them on first! 2. Play the game again, this time
BLINDFOLDED! 3. Play "Hide the Slippers." Tuck the slippers into nooks and
crannies in another room, and have the players try to find their own first. 4. Set out the
slippers in a row, and have each player take a turn matching a pair of slippers to the
matching feet. 5. Sit in a circle and pass the slippers around - with your eyes closed! -
and try to identify your own just by feel!
Ash asked:
Occasion: Scary Sleepover
What kind of games should I plan?
The Game Girl says:
Play Body Part! Have the kids sit in a circle in a dimly lit room while you make up a
story about a mean old witch who falls part, piece by piece. As you talk about each body
part, pass around a paper bag lined with a plastic bag, and have the kids feel inside
without looking. The bag should contain the "body parts" that fell off, such as
peeled grapes for eyeballs, a canned apricot for a tongue, popcorn kernels for teeth,
cooked spaghetti for brain, a large peeled tomato for a heart, cooked macaroni noodles for
intestines, a slab of Jell-O for the liver, and so on. Have the kids guess what you used
for the body parts, then reveal the foods!
Stacy and Fred asked:
Occasion: Twins 14th Birthday
My twin brother and I are having a coed sleepover. Do you have any game suggestions for
our party? Not spin the bottle or strip poker please!!
The Game Girl says:
Yikes! Who'd want to play those games with their brother or sister! I've got some
better ones I think you'll enjoy. Have a musical party with lots of your favorite CDs.
Then play a game of Name That Tune, by tape recording bits of familiar songs and playing
it back for the group to guess. Then play a game of Krazy Karaoke, where guests take turns
singing songs WITHOUT a musical background - and the crowd has to guess what they're
singing! Even more fun - have the kids sit in a circle, start the Karaoke music, and
choose one player to begin. Then suddenly pass the words and mic to another player who
must take over the song without missing a beat!
