GABRIELLE asked:

Occasion: Suprise bat mitzvah
I'm having a suprise bat mitzvah at my house for about 20 >girls. I wanted to know ideas for themes and things to do.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Why not make it a PJ party and have all the girls wear cute PJs. Look at www.oriental.com for great decorations and favors. I love teddy bears. Try some of these. two sets of ten items that are awkward to pass hand to hand, such as a feather, flypaper, popcorn kernel, Slime, caterpillar, toothpick, glass of water, ice cream cone, plate of marbles, and so on. Set the items on a table in a row. Have each player put on a pair of roomy garden gloves. Divide the group into two teams and have each team form a line. Have the first players on each team pick up the first item from the table and pass it to the next player in line. If a player drops or spills the item, it must be returned to the table and passed from the beginning again. First team to complete all the passes, wins! Here's a variation: Have the two teams wearing gloves stand in line. Give the first players the same number of pieces of gum as there are players on the team. The first player must hold the gum, and try to unwrap a piece to put in his mouth, then pass the gum pieces on to the next player, who must try to do the same. The first team to have all their mouths full of gum wins the game! Maybe baking cookies or brownies and have with do-it-yourself sundaes. rfing thruoud some of the other sections. try a box mystery game, makeovers. Have a pic of yourself blown up and play a game of Pin the body Part with you supplying the arms, legs, etc. then have everyone sign it.

Leah asked:

Occasion: Bat Mitzvah
My Bat Mitzvah is coming up in February and I would like >to do an ice skating party. Do you have any ideas on how to do this >kind of party?

The Party Girl's advice is:

Have games on the ice. Play musical chairs, do the limbo, have races. Play a version of hockey with a ball and brooms. Have fun prizes for the best and the worst skaters. Skate some songs as duos and trios. See who can do tricks. Look at gamegirl for some other ideas.

marisa asked:

Occasion: bat mitzvah
My bat mitzvah is coming up soon, I want a really cool theme, can you give me some good theme ideas

The Party Girl's advice is:

Look at party411.com/themes at the bat mitzvah area for some good ideas. Also at party411.com/gamaegirl in the same section. Also look at www.oriental.com for great decorations.

ebronz asked:

Occasion: bar mitzvah
Hello, What is the proper attire for the mother of the Bar Mitzvah boy , when >the party follows in a catering hall? Thank you ebronz >

The Party Girl's advice is:

If it is in the daytime, a good looking street length dress or suit. If it is the evening, an after 5 dress.

Meryl asked:

Occasion: Bar Mitzvah
For the evening affair I had originally wanted to do an indoor cookout theme however due to the late hour of sundown in May we would not be eating until 9:15p.m. My husband and I feel that is rather late to serve dinner and much might go to waste. We are considering dessert bars (i.e.sundae station, bananas foster, etc.) Have you seen this done before for a Bar Mitzvah. If so is there a catchy phrase to use on the invitation rather than just saying "join us for dessert and dancing"? We will be having the traditional lunch after services during the day. This will be for the party in the evening where we will also have a D.J. Thanks so much for your terrific ideas.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Why not a play on words about sweets or goodies? Like, good boy + good job = goodies - something like that

Meryl asked:

Occasion: Bar Mitzvah party
We are planning an indoor cookout theme with grilled items and shishkabobs etc.So far I have decided on red/white checkered cloths. I thought about using baskets lined with red and white napkins for the centerpieces (filled with something.)I was hoping you had other ideas since I've been seeing so many baskets lately.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Since May is the spring time when everything starts to bloom, go with flower pots that are decorated and filled with fake flowers such as red and white tulips or white hyacinth. Tie a large bow on the pot and attach some balloons in red and white to it. Put fake grass around the bottom of the pot.

marilynn norinsky asked:

Occasion: bar mitzvah
I need some leads for centerpiece ideas and possibly sign-in boards with a Noah;s are theme. All ages will be invited.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Use a different pair of animals for each table. For the sign-in board, use the ark with animals boarding. If you would like us to make these things for you, write back. We do this all the time. We can provide pricing and talk to you.

Jenna asked:

Occasion: bat mitzvah
My bat mitzvah is coming up and I don't have a theme. I'm someone that does a lot of activities and enjoys all of them so I can't use just one. I was thinking I can do like Jenna's Planet and put all the different things I enjoy on a different table. Does that make sense or would you suggest something else?

The Party Girl's advice is:

I like that idea. Make a list of all the things you like and think of a centerpiece that would work. For instance, if you play soccer, use a soccer ball and a miniature net. You don't have to have a different one for each table, you can use each more than once. Get pictures of each thing you like such as if you like to ride horses, a picture of you on horseback, and blow them up poster size and use them to decorate the room. You could call it Jenna's Planet and have a picture of a planet in space with little pics of each of you likes on it.

Jodi K asked:

Occasion: themes for bar mitzvah
hi..i am having difficulty coming up with ideas for my son's party. .he doesn't just love one thing..he is interested in many thing, but nothing sticks out...he is the middle son of 3 boys..he likes video-editing and technology, going on cruises for vacation, likes math and science...we have talked about many themes such as...candy, rainforest, childrens authors, gumballs, disney characters, music, etc...but have come up empty..do you have any ideas? we have a limited budget...the colors we haven't decided on yet...the tablecloths are either ivory or dark green and napkins can be ivory, dark green, cranberry..Help!!! we are not very creative. === Jodi K goodtwin59@yahoo.com HAVE A NICE DAY!!!

The Party Girl's advice is:

Have you looked at party411.com themes at the bar/bat mitzvah section? There are good ideas that can be scaled up or down. Also look at some of the other themes for ideas.

Rose G asked:

Occasion: bat mitzvah
I'm still a little ways off from planning or actually being bar mitzvahd, but, if I bring my friend's little brother, will he be bored (he's not Jewish)?

The Party Girl's advice is:

The religion part won't bore him, but how old is he? Under a certain age, everything is boring.

Mal asked:

Occasion: Bat Mitzvah
I'm having trouble thinking of a theme for my Bat Mitzvah. First of all, I really like the idea of a luau but my Bat Mitzvah is in October. Would it not work because of the season? And do you have any ideas for a good theme? Please send me some answers. Thanks

The Party Girl's advice is:

You can have a luau any time of the year. Winter just means it won't be outside. Look at party411.com/themes for luau ideas. Also look at the Bar/Bat Mitzvah area.

ellen falk asked:

Occasion: bat mitzvah
My daughter loves to write (poetry, short stories, etc.) and wants to be an author, but is afraid any theme based on this would be too "nerdy/bookwormish." Any thoughts on how to turn this interest into a fun theme as opposed to a truly nerdy one? Thanks.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Use authors who are more exciting to the kids like Shel Silverstein, Dr. Suess, Judy Blume, etc. Or pick another theme and write something for the party such as a clever invitation, or for the candle lighting ceremony.

Homer asked:

Occasion: bat mitzvah
I thought I sent this e mail earlier but it may not have gone through. I am just looking for some ideas for the candlelighting ceremony that don't involve the honoring or mentioning of family or friends. Thank you for any help you can give.

The Party Girl's advice is:

DJ's, party favors, and a candle lighting ceremony. The candle lighting ceremony consists of honoree calling up 16 people or groups of people that have made he/she calls them up, he/she says a few words, reads a poem or tells a story that reflects their impact on his/her life. It can be serious or light. You choose. When he/she is done speaking, each person or group then lights a candle and goes back to their seats. He/she then moves to the next person. Parents are usually relegated to the last candle. Some people include a 17th candle for good luck (that's his/her candle to light). Generally, the theme of the ceremony is based around his/her interests."

Paula asked:

Occasion: bar mitzvah
We are having the party starting noon and everyone will use the pool and spa facilities till 5pm.We will organize various games like volleyball etc too. At 5.30pm after everyone changes we will be having a Typical bar-mitzvah party with DJ and Buffet dinner in the party room at the facility. My problem is choosing a theme. My son likes the Simpsons and is thinking of a Simpsons theme but I am inclined to think that we should continue the Summer party theme and do something like Beach Blanket Bingo (as you have on your sample Party themes) or another Summer oriented theme. What do you think? If Simpsons theme is OK, do you have any ideas on how to implement it?

The Party Girl's advice is:

I know it's your son's party but after the decorations, what do you do with a Simpson's theme except act bratty. Try to get him to see that but if you can't, look at www.oriental.com for possible stuff for decor. Also, use the search engine to find other Simpson sites to get stuff. Good luck!

Robin Hartman asked:

Occasion: My Daughter's Bat-Mitzvah
My daughter is a shopaholic. Any ideas ? One idea we have - name each table a dept. store & try to decorate the table accordingly - favors little shopping bags with the kids names filled with goodies - Any ideas/better theme for a "mature" 13 ?????

The Party Girl's advice is:

I gave this idea to someone just a few days ago. I like it because everyone likes to shop no matter what their gender and age. Use dollar and cent signs with glitter and replicas of checks made out to the Bat Mitzvah girl. You can pick categories such as clothes, music, games, shoes, jewelry to name the food tables (if you are doing stations) and decorate appropriately. The most important thing is not the food and decorations but the DJ and how he gets the kids and adults into the whole thing. I would also have a caricature made of a man and a woman dressed to the hilt, (furs, tux, etc.) maybe sitting in a sports car and cut out the faces and take pics of the guests looking thru. Then donate the centerpieces to a shelter. You might ask the guests to each bring a non-perishable food for donation.

Sarah asked:

Occasion: 40's bat mitzvah
I'm having a 40's themed bat mitzvah, I have a swing band and instructors, but i need games, decorations and a way to make my party more authentic. I appreciate your help.

The Party Girl's advice is:

I am passing this reqest along to a friend who specializes in this stuff and she'll answer you. Have fun

Lorri Langmaid asked:

Occasion: Bat Mitzvah
I am trying to think of a theme. perhaps a summer theme. Not sure what would be good decorations or favors. Its going to be a semi fancy affair, so I don't want something to casual. Thanks for the help

The Party Girl's advice is:

Did you look at the theme part on the home page? I am going to ask a friend for some others and she'll contact you

Shelley asked:

Occasion: Bat Mitzvah
I need place card and centerpiece ideas that will help me stay in budget. Colors are pink, white and black. Using those colors for tablecloths and balloons over dance floor. aprox. 22 tables.

The Party Girl's advice is:

There are fabulous balloons with musical notes and fabulous mylar balloons that are juke boxes that go along with your theme. Balloon work is not what it used to be and is used at the most elegant of affairs. I would do pink and black latex (some come with musical notes on them but I don't know if they do in pink; I know they do in black). Have them coming out of a base mylar base or possibly a 57 Chevy replica (you can find these out of tagboard in full color for very little money). They scream 50's and they also go with your theme. Another creative thing to do if you are working with a decorations company... is to have a 2-sided base that depicts saddle shoes and socks with the balloons coming out of those! For the placecards, I would use dancing saddle shoes or a poodle skirt graphic. If you want to attach something...CD pins from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are $3 apiece (and sometimes they are on special for half-price). We can help with all of the above. Let us know or call Beth Cohen at 216-831-4411

Gail asked:

Occasion: daughter's bat mitzvah 15th birthday/girl
Looking for a great theme any thoughts on a millenium theme? she's a great all around kid into soccer, gymnastics, beanie babies, girl scouts. someone did a general theme "my favorite things" but i can't think of how to execute it. i have already hire a balloon person to decorate but i wanted to the centerpieces.

The Party Girl's advice is:

why not do a caricature of her ... make a theme... "Into the millennium with Gail Jr. (I don't know her name, obviously). In the caricature, you can have all her interests, with a calendar showing the pages flying up to 1/1/2000. Use these as the bases for the centerpieces. We do it all the time. Mount them on foam core, back to back...and the balloons go in the middle. Check out the caricatures at www.party411/caricature.html... or hire someone locally.

amanda asked:

Occasion: Bat Mitzvah 15th birthday/girl
Where can I find huge blown up pictures of candy or where else might i find smething that has to do with candy? I need center pieces to. Do you have any Ideas. My daughter loves candy.

The Party Girl's advice is:

There is a great company that makes candy plants that are fabulous to use as centerpieces...we do it all the time. You can either give them to someone at the table or have your daughter do a tzedukah thing and donate them to the children's floor at a hospital. For more information and a catalogue, call 1-800-336-9911.

Laura asked:

Occasion: bat mitzvah
I am looking for Bat Mitzvah party ideas. We will have about 100 people at the party. There will be about 40 kids. We want something casual and fun! The party is for my daughter and her friends, but we want it to be fun for adults also. We don't want a mini wedding. Let me know if you have any ideas.  Laura Laura, We have tons of themes. One of my favorites is just a simple balloon theme. We make balloon heads and we even let guests make their own and tie them off their chairs. A local balloon company should be happy to come and help the guests with this. Use loads of color, and ask your balloon person to use "crazee" balloons to dress the place up. You can also have a balloonologist come to make balloon animals, etc. Adults and children love this. Does this work for you...it's very economical, festive and can be great fun. The things that can be done with balloons today are unbelievable. By the way, what city are you in?

Mindy asked:

Occasion: Bat Mitzvah
Date = Jan 15, 2000 City = Venue = Theme = Alien? Ages = all Decor_Budget = unsure Dress = dressy casual Comments = The room were have rented is very classic, with a balcony, lots of columns and gothic windows. The carpet is a floral with burgundy and blues. My daughter wants an alien themed party. How can I incorporate these elements. Also, I would like to make futuristic centerpieces myself and might use holographic paper and foamcore or even neon in the room's colors. Where can I purchase holographic paper? Maybe you have a better idea on theme or decor. Thank you

The Party Girl's advice is:

Mindy, there is so much to choose from when it comes to an alien thing, even I, who do 4 bar/bat mitzvahs a weekend is overwhelmed. Thus I think the theme is great and you can easily pull it through. As far as the holographic paper--I'll get back to you. I'll also e-mail you with catalogues where you can get alien items. Remember, the "alien" color is glo-green!

Ellen asked:

Occasion: Son's Bar Mitzvah
Date = May 5 2000 City = Venue = Renting a villa, party will be poolside, under a tent overlooking the beach Theme = Pirates of the Caribbean Ages = 13 and up Decor_Budget = Dress = Island Party Comments = Since we live in St. Croix USVI we have very limited resources for planning a party. We are concerned about entertainment. We will probably have steel pan music for the cocktail hour and dining, but it is not easy to dance to steel pan. Also we would like some traditional Jewish Dance music, and contemporary music for the kids. I do not know of any D.J.'s down here that would be appropriate. Any suggestions. Also if you have any great ideas for party decorations, favors and games they would be welcomed.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Wow, that's tough. Is there a DJ that would be interested in working with you as far as music choices go? Have you tried any wedding bands--they usually know the hora and other Jewish songs. If need be, we certainly can help you by providing CD's of Jewish music if it isn't available there. I don't know your budget, however, there are a lot of DJ groups with dancers that travel all over the world. If you are interested, we can put you in touch with several. They also host the games, give out prizes and more. As far as a pirate party goes, for prizes I would give out costume jewelry (out of big treasure chest as people enter), glow jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, glasses), patches (to cover one eye), stuffed parrots, model boat kits, and other "pirate" type stuff. Items like these are available from Oriental Trading Co. (www.orient.com)--and I believe they ship anywhere!! Does this help?

lisa asked:

Occasion: Bat Mitzvah
I am responding to your answer. the haftarah is haftarah of Behukothai. The tzeduka idea is one we have thought of. the fruit baskets are great idea. But what kind of catchy phrase to pull it together with sign in and t shirts for the kids. the environment is about the 7th year and the jubilee. Which means the year of rest. we also want something appealing to kids.

The Party Girl's advice is:

Well, let's see. You may not like this, but hear me out. The title of the event would be what ties it together. And I'm trying to think of something that includes the environment, the year of rest and your son or daughter. What if your title were something like -- I'm sorry I don't know your child's name...so I'll use mine... "Save the environment with Sherri!" And the t-shirts could be about saving the environment with a graphic of the globe (there are some great great graphics). For the sign-in board, you could have your child actually holding this same globe...with him/her saying "Share your thoughts of saving the environment with Sherri!" I know that this is a reach, but it could be really meaningful event; the decorations are very easy using this as a theme. And using fruit baskets, etc., as something "from the earth" pulls in along with it. For the kids tables, there are fabulous "earth" balloons, etc. What do you think?

mom asked:

Occasion: bat mitzvah
Am looking for a great theme for my daughters bat mitzvah. It is May 8th and we would like something to do with a bat mitzvah. It is spring and her name is emily,. the torah reading has lots to do with the environment. we do not want to build sets we want something that we can incorporate place cards and decorations. Any ideas? Any cute phrases? What about the sign in board. She is a very pretty girl. She is a cool kid, very social. She is great in school. she likes to water ski and snow ski. She lover her summer camp. Camp Robindel. She is an all around kid. There is not anything that I can say she LOVES the most except her boyfriend these days. Oh, she does like clothes and fashion - this drives me a little crazy. Very interested in labels - I am not. The thought of themes about shopping or like that make my skin crawl. I believe that it should be in some keeping with bat mitzvah. Any help please send it our way Thanks

The Party Girl's advice is:

Happy to help; tell me a little more... how many adults how many kids what is your budget when you say environment...what is the actual title of her portion? Noah's Ark? or something similar...Garden of Eden...that's environment... let me know I agree that keeping it around the bat mitzvah and not around "shopping" is a good thing. You may want to include a tzedukah piece -- like have the centerpieces be fruit baskets (of the earth) that are donated to homeless shelters. Give me more information and I'll get back to you
